Angelfall – Susan Ee

I wouldn’t have picked this book up if it wasn’t once again for ‘Booktube’ and I am really pleased that I did as I enjoyed this book very much but maybe not as much as others. I am a massive fan of dystopian and i thought this book worked really well and had everything a dystopian novel needed.

The story follows Petryn, a 17 year old trying to help her frayed family survive in a post-apocalyptic California. As you can probably tell from the title, Angelfall, this book is about angels. It’s a post-apocalyptic novel where angels have invaded Earth. When her younger sister is taken by angels, Petryn must team up with an unlikely companion Raffe, to not only rescue her sister but uncover the secrets the angels hide!

The world created, I thought worked well and was very realistic which i enjoyed.
There was so much action and creepiness as well as humour which made this book a perfect read. This also made this book such an easy read, and I managed to fly through it in two nights!!

Petryn the protagonist, in my eyes was a perfect strong female protagonist; she was determined, stubborn and a total badass which was fab!! I enjoyed getting to know her immensely. This book is a brilliant journey of great character and spirit. Raffe, her companion I loved as well. He was brilliant and someone who I really grew to like! He has a long and mysterious past, which I am yearning to find out more about, but he is also compassionate, loyal, caring, trustworthy, and sweet beyond measure.

Another thing I really enjoyed was the relationship and dialogue between Raffe and Petryn as it was sarcastic and witty which made it funny to read! I can’t wait to see more of their relationship in the next book! (Totally ship them both!!!)

Character the only character I didn’t like was Petryn’s mother as she was creepy as hell?!! Personally I don’t think she was needed but I can totally see why Susan would want to include her as she really intrigued me!

One of my only criticism was the ending! I had no idea what was going on and I got so confused! We still didn’t know anything about why the angels are on Earth? Or anything behind their plans which was a bit frustrating. Again, I don’t want to spoil it but what happened to Petryn’s sister I thought was very weird and scary; I didn’t like it!! Whatever happened to happy endings?

Overall I am happy to award this book with 4/5 stars as I thought the plot was brilliant and really creative! The characters were fab and I could easily connect with them! It was such an easy read so if you are in a reading slump, I certainly recommend it!!

I would also like to thank Net Gallery for sending me this book and I can’t wait to read the next one!!

The Elite – Kiera Cass

I love this series!! So much happened in this book which made it so addictive and to top it all off it leaves you on another cliffhanger, making it so much worse.

‘The Elite’ begins with only six girls left in the selection from the original 35 and competition is fierce. But time is running out and Prince Maxon must choose a winner, one that will become his bride. America is seen as the favourite in his eyes however you can’t have a love story that simple, oh no! America must decide once again between Aspen; the boy from home or Maxon; the charming prince.

It was easy for me to jump right back into the world of Illea and the palace. I fell easily right back into the rhythm of the Selection process and life with the royal family. These books are very easy and certainly enjoyable reads – they make me wish that I was a princess! Once again we still have our love triangle between our two handsome young men and personally whilst reading I found it hard to make a decision of whom America should end up with – they both have there strengths and weaknesses. At times I am certain she should be with Maxon and then the next minute I’m positive she should be with Aspen instead! Oh gosh, it’s all so dramatic!

What I love about this book is the fact that the attention is taken away from Aspen and is more focused on Maxon. We get to know more about him, and what his character is really like. I also liked how we got to see America’s character develop, as she encounters more and more events in the palace. But at times America could get a bit frustrating which ruined her character slightly. By the end of the boo,k America was in a bit of an awkward place with both Maxon and Aspen and I feel she has a lot of work to do to ‘fix’ the situation…

The Elite is a step up from the first book as The Selection was quite light and wasn’t as serious as this book. In The Elite we get to see the cracks in the way Illea is run, and how they were more in danger than they expected. With more and more rebel attacks, more drama is created making the book more action packed!

I recommend ‘The Elite’ and ‘The Selection’ series for fans of fairy-tales with romance and action. Giving it 4/5, I really really really recommend this series and if you are still unsure check out our spoiler-free review on ‘The Selection’. If you are a fan of the series please do check out my review of ‘The One’

The 5th Wave – Rick Yancey

Aliens, Aliens and more Aliens! I really enjoyed this book, the concept was really interesting as well as the way it was written! I love this book so much and I’m really excited to hear it’s been turned into a movie with Chloe Grace Mortez as the lead! Eeeeek!

This book if you haven’t guessed is all about aliens! It mainly follows a young girl called Cassie fighting for survival during the invasion as well as trying to save her younger brother. A long the way she faces many different challenges and begins to uncover the mystery of what is the invasion which has been split into 5 different waves each destroying the human population. Now the time has come for Cassie and the 5th wave is drawing closer…

I love the style of writing in this book and how it starts off as a diary entry as we look back on Cassies life and discover what has happens! But not only do we see Cassies point of view we also see points of views from other characters who too play an important role in the storyline and help the reader uncover the mystery of the alien invasion! I thought this was really clever and enjoyed how each person’s storyline linked together.

I thought Cassie, the main protagonist was a brilliant character! You really saw her develop from a young care free teenager to some badass survivor making her so brilliant! It’s not just Cassie you see develop almost all the characters do making the reader feel as if they too have been caught in the invasion and begin to understand how bad the situation is!  This being a young adult novel there of course has to be a love triangle and we being to see it develop at the end of the book. But this isn’t any love triangle it is one with a twist…

Personally I really do recommend this book, even if your not a fan of aliens just give this book a try; I think you might like it! It is jam packed with adventure and action never leaving a dull moment as well as having awesome characters! I would give this book 4.5/5 stars and if I were you I would start reading now as the second book is coming out in September 2014 and you will definitely want to carry on the story; I know I did!
