‘Shadow and Bone’ (Netflix) Cast Reaction

This post was meant to be published a year ago, instead it’s been sitting all sad and forgotten in my ‘drafts’! My attitude towards this series however is the complete opposite. Words can’t describe how excited I am and I almost died when they released the cast photos! This is hands down my most anticipated TV show of the year so it’s only fitting that I finally share my reactions to all the casting and production news. Be prepared for lots of gushing and fawning.

Bardugo’s Grisha universe is a perfect example of stunning craftsmanship and unlimited imagination that is open to endless exploration and adventure. Transporting this world from page to screen isn’t a small feat but such responsibility has been embraced by executive producers Eric Heisserer (Arrival, Bird Box) and Shawn Levy (Stranger Things, Arrival), with Leigh Bardugo also on board as a producer. I have total and utter faith that this adaptation will stay true to the books and will successfully embody everything we as the fans cherish in this series. The show is being filmed in Budapest, a baroque city landscape that exhibits grandeur and dramatic beauty, all elements that we see mirrored throughout Bardugo’s Grishaverse. I look forward to witnessing the stunning architecture and filming locations when it is safe to do so, especially since my trip there was sadly cancelled this year.

When casting such a well-loved series there’s always a chance that some fans will be disappointed, but I don’t think this is the case for this show. The casting directors for this show have hit the nail on the head for every single character; it’s PERFECT.

Shadow and Bone

SAB20

Let’s start with the main man himself, The Darkling who is being played by Ben Barnes! *Swoon*. My love for him as Prince Caspian in Narnia has never died and now we get to fall for him all over again, but time as the villain! This is one my favourite castings, and to me he’s the perfect Darkling, he’s got that mysterious and cunning stare that would easily have me spilling all my secrets!

Alina Starkov: Jessie Mei Li. The decision in making Alina half-shu is brilliant and I love the fact that we are get to see a half-asian actress in a major role. I’m so excited to see what Jessie does with this character and I hope this encourages more biracial and multiracial characters to be represented in film and books. The more I look at her the more I see Alina, and I can’t praise this casting enough.

Mal Oretsev: Archie Renaux. Mal was never my favourite character in the series BUT I’m excited for this casting and maybe Archie might change my opinion on Mal? He’s another casting that I’m slowly falling in love with, I’ll happily be the first one to throw my hands up and admit that I was wrong to hate book Mal!

Genya Saffin: Dasiy Head. Another casting that I love and I’m eager to see how they transform and bring such a heartbreakingly loveable character to life. Sadly Genya’s casting has been getting a lot of hate but I want to say loud and clear that I think she is BEAUTIFUL!

Zoya Nazyalensky: Sujaya Dasgupta. Zoya is such a strong personality and renegade, so Sujaya has got some big boots to fill, but I’m quietly confident that she’s going to kill it.

Six of Crows

SAB202

Kaz Breker: Freddy Carter. He’s got that chizzled, artful mastermind look about him, everything about him screams Kaz! This is probably my favourite casting of the entire series, Freddy Carter IS Kaz and I can’t wait to see him brought to life.

Inej Ghafa: Amita Suman. This cast is so diverse and I’m so excited to see all the different representation on screen and for others to fall in love with these characters and their story. Once again, another casting that I’m utterly in love with and plus I’m living for all the behind the scenes of her stunt training on instagram!

Jasper Fahey: Kit Young. He’s got that charming smile and cunning look and I’m just so excited to see one of my favourite characters come to life. I can’t wait to see his character on screen and all those epic fight scenes with his gunslinging skills.

Nina Zenik: Danielle Galligan. Just look at that headshot, if looks could kill! Another casting that sadly has been getting a lot of hate due to her not being ‘curvy’ or ‘big’ enough’. It’s evidently clear that the creators and actors of this show care a lot about these characters, so I’m choosing to focus on the positives and celebrate this incredible cast. Nina is such a strong and powerful character and I’m confident that Danielle will do her justice.

Matthias Helvar : Calahan Skogman. The longer I look at the cast pictures the more and more I see these characters come to life! Calahan you better look after my little Matthias!

Damn this is one good-looking cast! You can already see, how much thought, care and enthusiasm has been put into this show and I living for all of the cast behind the scene photos. Clearly they are just as excited and passionate about this shows and its characters as the fans.

Shadow and Bone will be hitting our screens on 23rd April 2021 and until then I’ll be re-reading all the books in preparation for an ultimate binge-sesh when it’s finally released!

Nevernight Trilogy by Jay Kristoff – 12 Days of Blogmas

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

A mysteriously artful and exhilarating read that refused to be put down and one which has earned a place as one of my favourite reads of 2019. It is clear that the writing style is either a hit or miss with readers, but for me it was a beautifully crafted masterpiece filled with unique and descriptive metaphors that came to life on the page. Mia is a powerful and fiery protagonist that successfully drives the story along a path of unexpected twists and turns. Her developing relationship with Tric is again a new favourite, and I especially enjoyed their playful conversations and blossoming romance. Everything about this book is incredible, Mia journey is one that needs to be shared and enjoyed by readers and is one which is constantly filled with intense fight scenes, carefree and foulmouthed language and a level of sass that remains unbeaten.

Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff

After falling utterly in love with everything Nevernight, I had very high expectations for Godsgrave and its fair to say that Kristoff has once again surpassed my expectations and has crafted an exhilarating read filled with jaw-dropping moments and surprise twists. Mia still remains one of my favourite fictional characters, she’s fierce, intelligent and emotionally raw, leaving us readers with a character that feels real and thoughtful. I particularly enjoyed the witty remarks from both Mr Kindly and Eclipse (and Mia)! In this book, Mia is forced to train as a Gladiator in order to accomplish her lifelong desire to assassinate two of the most powerful men, and believe me when I say that the fight scenes in this book hold a grand and cinematic quality; they are beautifully intense and page-turning. Once again, Kristoff excels at creating a unique fantasy world filled with equally fantastic cast of characters and an unexpected storyline that is never once predictable.

Darkdawn by Jay Kristoff

I wasn’t prepared for this series to finish, believe me when I say that I savoured every page. I was expecting a grand and fitting conclusion for Mia, and that is exactly what we received, the fight scenes we bigger, the relationships were stronger and the whole experience was unforgettable. I cried, which isn’t really a surprise but Kristoff manages to give these characters a sense of realism and an unexpected emotional connection that has you praying for their survival and much deserved happy ending. What dominates this book is the intensity of the action and the beautifully choreographed fight scenes that allow our characters to shine and do what they do best. Kristoff also manages to include love triangle without lowering the tone and making it cheesy, all the emotions are raw, real and heartbreaking. Mia and her gang of assassins is a group I’ve learned to love and cherish, I’m going miss her witty interactions, impulsive nature and killer instinct. Thank you Jay for creating a wonderfully imaginative and compelling story packed full of memorable and unique characters, this whole trilogy has been a ride from start to finish and is an experience that has inspired to explore my own writing capabilities.

‘ShadowHunters’ casting announcement – Valentine

Well, well, well we have our Valentine! Alan Van Sprang will be playing the evil Valentine in ‘ShadowHunters’. Ooo it’s all very exciting, it’s all coming together! I’m genuinely so excited for this, I genuinely think the cast is spot on. I haven’t actually heard of this guy but everyone else seems to be happy so I’ll trust the fandom!

‘ShadowHunters’ casting announcement – Luke and Alec

image

Sooo Mathew Daddario and Isaiah Mustafa have been cast as Alec and Luke in the new tv show ShadowHunters!

I haven’t heard of these two actors so it will be interesting to see how they portray these characters.
My first reaction a little bit mixed. The guy playing Alec looks how I would picture Alec i.e dark hair ect. But Luke on the other hand is really rather different (probably because I have Aiden Turner in my head). Nonetheless I am sure they have been cast for a reason and I’m still really intrigued as to how they will encapsulate these characters.

‘ShadowHunters’ Casting Announcement – Clary

So we finally have our Clary! Kat McNamara has been cast to portray this beloved character!  (I know I’m a little late but it was announced at like 10 last night and I was in bed and at school all today…)
I’m really happy with this casting. She is pretty much how I pictured Clary! I’m sure her acting will be brill, according to IMDb she’s been in all sorts so she must have tonnes of experience she can use to her advantage!

‘Shadowhunters’ Casting Announcement – Izzy and Simon!

image

So Emeraude Toubia and Alberto Rosende have been cast as Simon and Izzy in the new TV show ShadowHunters.

My first reaction to this was meh, to be honest I really don’t know how I feel I feel about this. Although that’s exactly how I imagined them the first time I read the books. I know it’s really horrid to say but I just can’t get Robbie and Jemima out of my head…

I am being a bit hasty to judge because I’ve never seen them act but ehhh, I dunno. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see, I hope they can prove me completely wrong!
