Funniest Books and Characters | April Fools Day 2021

Happy April Fools Day and Happy Birthday Fred and George Weasley! April Fools Day is the only day of the year that encourages mischief and all sorts of funny business, and I hope that none of you have fallen victim to any pranks or trickery. In celebration I thought I’d share a few of my favourite ‘funny’ books and and characters who’s personality and wit never fail to make me smile and continues to bring some much needed laughter to my day! Enjoy!

The Unhoneymooners by Christian Lauren –  I’m a sucker for Christina Lauren, her books never fail to make me smile and are all just super adorable! So far I think this is one of my favourites, the enemies-to-lovers and fake dating trope made this such a fun and lighthearted read.

The Martian by Andy Weir – A man stranded on Mars, what’s funny about that? Nothing, but our protagonist Mark Watney makes the best out of a bad situation and will have you cracking up at every page. Every bit of his dialogue is hilarious, he always finds the most surprising and inappropriate thing to say, even in the direst situations!

The Illuminae Files by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff – Amie Kaufman is a mastermind when it comes to creating lighthearted and effortless back and forth banter! Again, I didn’t expect to laugh this much! I’m OBSESSED with both Kady/Ezra and Hannah/Nik and they’ve earned a spot on my favourite fictional couples list.

King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo – I have two words for you, Nikolai Lantsov. This man always knows what to say and his witty remarks and charm just makes my heart swoon. Move over Azriel there’s a new fictional boyfriend in town!

In a Holidaze by Christina Lauren – This book is chaos and I loved it! In a Holidaze is a typical Christina Lauren with a cute romance, steamy scenes, and lots of laughs.

Me, Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews – Being classed by many as a ‘cancer book’ you wouldn’t expect it to be funny or have yourself laughing repeatedly at little moments, but I found it a brilliant addition. The balance of seriousness and humour was perfect and at times I did find myself tearing up and experiencing all sorts of emotions!

The Viscount Who Loved Me by Julia Quinn – The Bridgerton sibling bickering and banter is another one of my favourites, now combine that with an enemies to lovers storyline and you’ve got yourself a cracking storyline filled with little pockets of joy! What I love the most about Kate and Anthony’s relationship are the constant witty remarks that slowly uncover each others hidden feelings for one another and that moment of realisation where they declare their love!

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan – This series is a bucket full of fun and will always be one of my childhood favourites!

Aurora Rising by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff – This book is hilarious! I don’t usually laugh out loud while reading but this book made me laugh so many times I lost count. The banter between this unlikely bunch of characters is hands down one of my favourites, it’s just so effortless and real! My copy of Aurora Buring is arriving today and can’t wait to join these characters on another adventure!

Angelfall by Susan Ee – Penryn and Raffe’s unconventional relationship is another one that’s packed full of witty dialogue and brilliant character interactions. I can’t recommend this book enough and I think I’ve just convinced myself to re-read it again soon!

“Oh, please. Your giant head is getting too big for this forest. Pretty soon, you’re going to get stuck trying to walk between two tress. And then, I’ll have to rescue you.” I give him a weary look. “Again.”

Cinder by Marissa Meyer – When I think of funny characters my mind instantly jumps to the impulsive and adorable android Iko! She is such an underrated character and one of the best sidekicks ever, she is just full of love and never fails to speak her mind!

Iko rolled to her side, clasping her metal grippers over her chest. “Prince Kai! Check my fan, I think I’m overheating.”

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo – Leigh Bardugo creates the BEST characters, I’m in love with all of them! Six of Crows is filled with comical moments and sarcastic banter that makes me wish I was a member of the Dregs. I can’t wait to see these character brought to life soon!

“Kaz is … I don’t know, he’s like nobody else I’ve ever known. He surprises me,” “Yes, like a hive of bees in your dresser drawer.”

Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging by Louise Rennison – Whenever I see or think about stuffed olives my mind goes straight to the teenage iconic that is Georgia Nicolson. She was my generations Bridget Jones and captured all the trial and tribuations of growing up. This book still makes me smile and is another chaotic and ridiculous read.

Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins – Harper Price, was born ready for a Homecoming tiara. But after a strange run-in at the dance leaves her with incredible abilities, Harper’s destiny takes a turn for the seriously weird. She becomes a Paladin, one of an ancient line of guardians with agility, super strength and lethal fighting instincts and with these powers, she’s been given the task to protect her least favourite person; David Stark. This book is funny, adorable, and filled with intense fight scenes and an action-packed storyline. It’s the perfect combination of contemporary and fantasy!

Love in a Cold Climate by Nancy Mitford – Mitford has a gift for creating light-hearted and joyful books that you can’t help but love and savour. She easily steals my heart with her wonderfully awkward characters and storylines that centre around and satirise British aristocracy, love and relationships.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen – And last but not least, a little bit of Jane Austen! Her detailed, exaggerated description of societal and superficial expectations of the ‘ideal’ woman during the eighteenth century is a perfect example of her iconic use of humour and irony.
