It’s been a while since I’ve read this book so I apologise if I forget any bits but it was such a good book I doubt that I will. I loved Bracken’s Darkest Minds Series so when I heard that she was writing another series I was over the moon; the plot sounded unique and exciting and I fell in love with the time travel element.
For those who don’t know ‘Passenger’ follows Etta Spencer as she is thrown into an unfamiliar world by a stranger with a dangerous agenda, Etta is certain of only one thing: she has traveled not just miles but years from home. Here she meets Nicolas Cater and together they must embark on a perilous journey across centuries and continents, piecing together clues to find a device that could change the time traveling world forever!
From that description how could you not love it. The storyline was filled with action and adventure and I really loved how we were able visit a variety of different times in history my favourite being London during the World War. To begin with I found it difficult to get into however it wasn’t long till I got to grips with the storyline and from point on I couldn’t put it down.
I thought the main characters, Etta and Nicholas, were so well written and beautiful and I enjoyed seeing their teamwork and relationship developed. Another thing I loved was that Nicholas was black and that to me was really important and is one of the reasons I will recommend Passenger to everyone. Literature, especially the Young Adult genre, is so lacking in representation of people of color and Passenger is a step in the right direction. Etta was also fab. She wasn’t arrogant at all, she worked hard, she never gave up and most importantly she believed in herself which was refreshing. We also see in this book, two different points of view which I really enjoyed and it clear whose perspective we were reading from.
The ending! Bracken knows how to create an amazing and dramatic ending which I didn’t see coming and has made me even more excited for the second book!
Overall, despite the fact that at some times I felt that the story was a bit rushed and that it took a while to get into to, I really enjoyed it’s characters and unique plot and I rate it 4/5 stars! I’m really looking forward to the next book in the series and I really recommend that you pick it up!
