I finally watched this film and I’m so glad I did as I thought it was a really good book to film adaptation with an amazing cast, character and plot line. If you haven’t yet read the book, I highly recommend that you do as it is a brilliant book and I will leave my review here.
In the film, the plot and dual perspectives were more cohesive, interchanging the military sequences with Cassie’s survival out in the wilderness and getting to know Evan worked really well and were nicely balanced. It fixed up the pacing problems in the book and was thrilling and action-packed all the way through as well as sticking to the storyline.
I thought all the casting was perfect; Chloe Grace Moretz as Cassie worked really well and she convincingly showed us just how scary it is to be the last one standing in your family. Plus her relationship with Sammy I thought was really cute! Now the big question is whether your Team Ben or Team Evan? Personally, I still don’t know who I prefer but I thought they both portrayed their characters well. Ringer. She certainly had a badass and ‘don’t mess with me’ vibe and I like the fact we begin to see her open up by the end of the film but if I’m honest I wasn’t a fan of her emo/gothic look.
I have a few negatives about this adaptation, the first being that I felt that we were missing some of the humour we saw in the book like Cassie’s sarcasm and the relationship between Cassie and Ben and my favourite part of the book, when Cassie helps Evan remove shrapnel from his butt! I also felt that the characters relationships weren’t developed as much as I would like them to be, like the relationships within Squad 53 especially between Ben and Sammy. The cheesy disaster movie moments I thought made the film more dramatic that it should have been but despite that I thought it was a great adaptation full of action and kick ass characters. That seems like a lot of negatives but did enjoy the film!
Overall, I really enjoyed this film and I thought I was a good adaptation even though it missed a few scenes but thats what you’ve got to expect in a adaptation! I hope it gets a sequel and it would be really interesting to see where they go with that! I would love to hear your opinions of the film, so feel free to leave a comment below!
I really missed her sarcasm in the movie too
It made her character in the book.
